Design a YouTube thumbnail for an online baking course

A course thumbnail has about a second to explain a loaf, a promise and a person. This example builds the cover for a sourdough lesson around one crust close-up and four words, then checks the design at the tiny size phones actually show.

Steps

  1. Pick one frame where the bread fills half the picture — a torn crust with steam, shot close — instead of a wide kitchen scene. Wide scenes shrink into grey mush in the feed and the loaf disappears.
  2. Set a four-word title in heavy type on the quiet side of the frame and keep your face, if you use one, looking toward the bread rather than at the viewer, so the eye lands on the food first.
  3. Preview the finished thumbnail at feed size and at phone size before uploading. If the title cannot be read at arm's length on a phone, shorten the words instead of shrinking the type.

Worked example

Input file
sourdough-hero.jpg — a close photo of a torn sourdough loaf on a flour-dusted board, steam rising, dark wooden table as the backdrop, shot for lesson 3 of the course.
Settings
Thumbnail 1280 by 720, title text Sourdough in One Day in bold cream letters with a dark outline, face photo omitted, export JPG kept under 2 MB.
Expected result
A cover image where the crust texture stays visible at feed size, the four title words read instantly, and nothing important sits in the bottom-right corner where the duration badge lands.

Illustrative example: the loaf photo, title wording and layout described here are a sample composition for this guide, not a published thumbnail or its performance.

Frequently asked question

What size and file weight should the thumbnail be?

Build it at 1280 by 720 pixels and keep the exported JPG under 2 MB. If the file comes out heavier, lower the JPG quality a step before you shrink the dimensions, because the feed rewards sharpness at the standard size.
