AI image prompts for product photos: 30 examples that work

Most bad AI product photos are not bad models; they are vague prompts. A prompt that says only “a nice candle” leaves every decision — light, angle, background, scale — to chance, so the result looks generic. A good prompt answers five questions in one sentence: what the product is, what it is made of, where it sits, how it is lit, and how the camera sees it. The 30 examples below follow that formula, and each one is written so you can swap in your own product and keep the rest.

The five-part formula

Write prompts in this order and you will stop getting surprises. First, name the product exactly, with its material and colour: not “mug” but “matte ceramic mug in sage green”. Second, add one honest detail that proves quality, such as a stitched seam, a brushed metal lid, or visible grain. Third, place it somewhere believable: a plain background for a listing, a real room for a lifestyle shot. Fourth, name the light, because light does more work than any adjective: soft window light flatters most products, while hard noon sun creates harsh shadows. Fifth, name the camera: a straight-on eye-level shot for a listing, a 45-degree angle for food and cosmetics, a close-up for texture.

Two habits make the formula work. Keep the product the only hero: one product, one clear surface, no competing props. And keep text out of the image. AI models still garble labels, logos and packaging words, so generate a clean product shot and add any text afterwards in an editor. The batch-1 article on choosing 2x or 4x upscaling makes the same point about finishing steps: generate clean, then finish, never the other way round.

30 examples that work

Each example is one complete prompt. Replace only the product words and keep the light, angle and background. The first ten are listing-safe: plain backgrounds, centred products, nothing that would fail a marketplace main-image check.

Examples 1 to 10: listing photos1. White ceramic vase with dried pampas grass, plain light-grey background, soft studio light, straight-on product photo. 2. Stainless steel water bottle, brushed finish, plain white background, soft daylight, centred, sharp focus. 3. Brown leather wallet, visible stitching, plain beige background, gentle window light, 45-degree angle. 4. Glass perfume bottle with gold cap, plain white background, soft diffused light, eye-level shot. 5. Cotton tote bag in natural ecru, plain light background, even studio light, straight-on photo. 6. Wooden cutting board with olive oil bottle beside it, plain warm-white background, soft morning light. 7. Running shoes in white and navy, plain grey background, soft studio light, three-quarter angle. 8. Scented candle in amber glass jar, plain cream background, warm soft light, centred composition. 9. Silver hoop earrings on a small stone stand, plain white background, bright soft light, close-up. 10. Backpack in dark green canvas, plain light-grey background, even daylight, straight-on product photo.

The next ten put the product in a believable life. Lifestyle shots sell the feeling, so name the room, the time of day and one or two props at most. More props than that and the product stops being the hero.

Examples 11 to 20: lifestyle scenes11. Ceramic mug of coffee on a wooden kitchen table near a window, morning light, cosy breakfast scene. 12. Linen throw blanket draped over a beige sofa, living room, soft afternoon light, calm atmosphere. 13. Skincare serum bottle on a bathroom shelf with a green plant nearby, bright natural light. 14. Canvas sneakers on a city pavement beside a bicycle, golden hour light, casual street style. 15. Wooden watch on a desk next to a notebook and glasses, warm desk lamp light, work scene. 16. Tea set on a low table in a sunny garden room, dappled light through leaves, relaxed mood. 17. Baby romper folded on a white bed with soft toys nearby, gentle daylight, tender nursery feeling. 18. Camping lantern glowing on a wooden picnic table at dusk, warm light, outdoor evening scene. 19. Yoga mat rolled beside a water bottle in a bright studio, clean minimal space, morning energy. 20. Wool scarf draped over a wooden chair by a fireplace, warm evening light, winter comfort.

The last ten are for detail, scale and seasons: the shots that answer a buyer’s questions before they ask. A close-up proves material, a hand or a familiar object proves size, and a seasonal set gives you a reason to refresh a listing without reshooting.

Examples 21 to 30: close-ups, scale and seasons21. Extreme close-up of knitted wool texture, soft natural light, every stitch visible, neutral background. 22. Close-up of a leather bag zip and brass hardware, sharp focus, warm studio light. 23. Hand holding a small ceramic cup for scale, plain background, natural daylight, realistic proportions. 24. Candle beside a paperback book for scale, wooden table, soft evening light, cosy reading corner. 25. Jewellery ring in a small open box, macro close-up, bright soft light, sparkling but realistic. 26. Christmas ornament set in red and gold on pine branches, warm festive light, holiday product photo. 27. Summer straw hat and sunglasses on a beach towel, bright sunlight, holiday feeling, clean composition. 28. Autumn ceramic pumpkin decorations on a wooden mantel, warm golden light, seasonal home decor. 29. Flat lay of stationery, pens, notebook and washi tape, top-down view, plain cream background. 30. Flat lay of baking tools, whisk, flour and eggs, top-down view, rustic wooden table, daylight.

Fixes for the five most common failures

A practical workflow: generate four variants of one prompt, pick the best at normal size, and only then upscale or remove the background. The remove-background guide and the small-shop photo guide both follow that order, and it saves the most common beginner cost: paying to enlarge a version you were going to discard anyway. For marketplace sizes, the current published guidance is a good target: about 2000 pixels on the longest side for a main image, a pure white background on Amazon, and a centred product filling most of the frame.

Honest limits

  • AI images are illustrations of a product idea, not photographs of your exact stock. For colour-critical or safety-critical details, photograph the real item and use AI for the lifestyle and seasonal versions.
