Etsy's 2026 photo rules and AI: how to stay compliant

On 22 October 2026 Etsy changed the deal for listing photos. The headline is not a ban on AI. It is an anchor: most physical listings must now include at least one unedited photograph of the actual item, against a real background, and every other photo, AI-assisted or not, must accurately show what the buyer will receive. At the same time Etsy banned bot-generated listings made with no human involvement, and banned AI-written functional guides such as patterns and recipes. Sellers who read that as the end of AI photos will lose a useful tool for no reason. Sellers who ignore it and keep leading with a fully generated hero image will lose listings. This article is the middle path, in the order you actually fix a listing.

What changed on 22 October 2026, in plain terms

Etsy published the update as Creativity and Trust in the Age of AI, amending its Listing Image Requirements, part of the House Rules. The reasoning, as Etsy framed it, is trust: many buyers cannot tell which items involve AI, and that uncertainty is now one of the top reasons buyers hesitate. Three changes matter for photos: the unedited-photo anchor, the accuracy rule for every supplemental image, and a new detection notice in the listing form, which, according to coverage, shows sellers tips when Etsy detects an AI-generated image. Current reports of AI misuse do not yet lead to immediate enforcement while detection tools are still being developed. That is not a grace period to exploit; it is a warning to fix listings while the notice is still a tip rather than a takedown.

Two companion bans are often confused with the photo rule, so keep them separate. Bot-generated listings, made with no human involvement, are not allowed and can lead to removal of the listing and, in serious cases, the shop. That is about who made the listing, not which tool edited a photo. AI-written functional guides are a product ban, not a photo rule: a knitting pattern, recipe, or other step-by-step instruction that AI wrote is no longer allowed, and such a listing must show a real result made from the instructions, not an AI picture of one. If you sell a pattern, the product itself is the problem, and no photo fix will save it.

The anchor photo: what unedited actually means

Unedited means what it says. Photograph the actual item you will ship, or, for a made-to-order item, the same design made to the same specification, against a real background, and upload it without filters, retouching, background replacement, or AI enhancement. Do not smooth the surface, brighten the colour beyond what the camera captured, remove a flaw, or crop out a part that changes how it looks. A plain phone photo in daylight passes this test. A studio photo colour-corrected into a different shade does not, even if it looks better. Put this photo first, not third behind a prettier generated scene.

Make it easy: choose one repeatable setup, a plain wall or table, daylight from one window, the item centred, and use it for every SKU. Photograph the item once, well, and you have an anchor you can reuse for variants sharing the same design, provided colour, material and finish match. A red anchor cannot anchor a blue variant, so photograph each colourway separately.

Listing typeAnchor photoWhat AI supplements may do
Handmade physical itemOne unedited photo of the actual item, real background, first in the setAdjust light and colour honestly, crop, resize, swap background, if the item itself stays accurate
Vintage itemOne unedited photo of the exact vintage item, including visible wearSame honest edits only; never hide damage, wear or flaws
Print-on-demand physical itemAuthorised production-partner mockup accepted as the exception, where the mockup owner allows itGenerate lifestyle context around the true design, without changing the design, colours or print area
Digital download artworkA visual preview or excerpt of the actual files the buyer receivesGenerate the artwork itself if you designed it and disclose it; previews must show the real files
Audio file with no visual elementRepresentative imagery allowed, including AI-generated, if it does not misleadUse imagery that does not imply a physical product or a different sound
Pattern, recipe or functional guideOne real, unedited photo of something actually made from the instructionsNone that replaces the real result; AI-written guides themselves are banned

Notice what the table does not say: an AI background swap or a lifestyle scene is not banned. Etsy allows edited supplements, including AI edits, provided they accurately represent the item. Fixing light, correcting a colour back to its true shade, cropping, resizing and changing a background are described as acceptable edits in coverage of the update. Changing the item is not: its colour, texture, condition, design, size or included parts, or hiding a flaw, are misrepresentation, with or without AI. The test for every supplement is: if the buyer compared this image with the parcel, would they feel it promised something different? If yes, do not upload it.

Disclosure: where it goes, and what it must say

Disclosure has two layers, and sellers often do only one. The first layer is in the listing editor, under how the item is made: for a physical item created with AI, choose the AI generator option where Etsy asks what tools were used, and for a digital item choose the AI generator option where Etsy asks how the content was created. That is Etsy's own field, and leaving it blank while the description mentions AI is only half done. The second layer is in the description itself, in plain language, near the top, not buried at the bottom after shipping terms. One sentence is enough if it is honest, and the examples below are written to be copied and adapted, not to be treated as legal wording.

Disclosure for an AI-designed digital itemThis artwork was designed with an AI image generator from my own original prompt, then selected, edited and checked by me. You will receive digital files only; no physical item will be shipped.
Disclosure for AI-edited listing photosThe first photo shows the actual item, unedited. Some later photos were edited with AI tools to adjust lighting and background; the item itself, including its colour, size and details, is unchanged.

Do not write a disclosure that contradicts the photos. A line saying photos were edited for lighting, above a supplement that also changed the colour, is worse than no disclosure. Do not call AI output handmade, hand-painted, or hand-drawn, and do not present a generated image as your own photograph. If a photo was generated entirely, say so, and keep it after the anchor photo. If Etsy shows a detection notice when you add an image, read it: it tells you how the listing will be read by the next buyer and reviewer.

Now the fix order for existing listings. First, audit the first photo of every best seller: is it the real item, unedited, on a real background? If not, replace it before anything else. Second, audit supplements for changed colour, texture, or hidden flaws, and replace any that fail the parcel test. Third, add the editor field and description line to every listing using AI at all. Fourth, remove bot-generated listings and AI-written patterns or recipes, which are product bans, not photo problems. Fifth, re-check the Seller Handbook and any Shop Manager notice for your categories, because enforcement is still developing and category exceptions are where a general article can mislead a specific shop. Our Etsy digital-product guide covers the designed-by-seller line for downloads, and the earlier Etsy photo guide covers photo slots and selling power; this article covers only the 2026 compliance change.

Honest limits

  • This article summarises Etsy's 22 October 2026 update and coverage of it, as checked in late 2026. It is not legal advice, and Etsy policy, category exceptions and enforcement change; the Seller Handbook and your Shop Manager notices are the final word for your shop.
  • The update announcement did not, in coverage checked, give a single effective date for every element, and Etsy has described detection tools as still being developed. Do not treat a lack of immediate enforcement as permission to keep a misleading listing live.
  • In Movapix, images cost about 0.8 cents per successful generation, with no subscription. Credits never expire, and an unused wallet balance can be refunded within 7 days. Commercial use is allowed, and images are private by default.
