AI product photo color accuracy: keep true color across scenes and variants
Colour is a promise, not a decoration. When the parcel arrives in a different shade than the photo, the buyer does not blame the light. They blame the seller.
Why AI changes product color: new scene light, white balance, compression
A new scene brings new light, and new light recolours everything in it. Warm evening light yellows a white mug, cool shade blues a beige fabric, and a sunset scene turns a sage vase olive. The AI is not trying to change your product; it is lighting a new room, and your product sits in that room.
White balance adds a second shift. A camera set for daylight renders the same cream differently from one set for tungsten, and an AI scene inherits the balance of its imagined light, not of your studio. Two photos of one product under two balances already look like two products.
Compression adds a third, quieter shift. Saving, uploading, and re-saving smooths subtle tones, pushes saturation, and clips highlights, so dusty pink drifts toward bright pink and navy toward black. The drift is small on a monitor and obvious on a phone, where most buyers first see it.
Materials drift unevenly. Knit, suede, and matte ceramic absorb light and shift gently; patent leather, glass, and metal reflect the scene and shift hard. A set that looks consistent on white can fall apart once each product enters a different coloured room.
Color-check workflow: original photo as reference, check on phone and another screen
Fix one reference photo and never move it. Photograph the real product in soft daylight on a neutral background, and keep that file untouched: it is the colour every later export must match. Name the colour in words as well, “terracotta, not orange” or “sage green, not mint”, because a name catches a drift that tired eyes miss.
Then check in three passes. First, put the reference and the export side by side at full size and look at the product only, ignoring the background: a pretty new background makes a wrong colour feel right. Second, check the export on a phone, because most buyers shop there. Third, check it on a second screen, because one screen can flatter a colour that two screens expose.
Judge by the product material, not the whole image: compare fabric weave, glaze, and leather grain, not the average tone of the frame, which the new background always changes. If the material matches in all three passes, publish. If it differs in any pass, discard the variant: a colour “close enough” on your screen is a return on the buyer screen.
Color-variant photos: when it is safe and when you must reshoot
It is safe to change the background around a real variant. Photograph the red bottle, the blue bottle, and the green bottle, then place each untouched cut-out on the same studio background: same light, same framing, same set, three true colours. Background changes are safe precisely because the product never changes.
It is not safe to invent a variant. An AI “same bottle in navy” is a guess about dye, glaze, and finish, and no prompt lock makes it true. Buyers will order the navy they saw and return the difference. A variant photo is a stock claim: publish only colours you hold and have photographed.
Reshoot when the colour itself is the product: dyed fabric, glazed ceramic, painted wood, cosmetics. These materials shift most under new light, and a reshoot in the same daylight as the reference costs less than one return. Also reshoot when the reference itself is doubtful: if the original photo already drifts from the real product, every variant built on it inherits the error.
One honest exception exists: a clearly labelled visualisation, kept out of the purchasable variant list, can show a colour direction while the real variant is on its way. It must never sit in the variant picker, carry a price, or replace the real photo once the variant exists.
So sánh thớ vải, lớp men, vân da, không phải tông trung bình của khung hình, thứ mà nền mới luôn thay đổi.
Đổi nền xung quanh biến thể thật là an toàn. Chụp chai đỏ, chai xanh dương và chai xanh lá, rồi đặt từng phần cắt nguyên vẹn lên cùng nền studio: cùng ánh sáng, cùng khung hình, cùng bộ ảnh, ba màu thật. Đổi nền an toàn chính vì sản phẩm không bao giờ thay đổi.
Steps
- Photograph the real product in soft daylight on a neutral background, and keep that file as the colour reference. Name the exact colour in words, not just in the photo.
- Open Product Studio and upload the reference photo. Change the background around the untouched product, never the product itself.
- For a scene variant, generate one AI scene and lock the colour: name the product and its exact colour, forbid changing, warming, cooling or saturating it, and forbid adding text.
- Compare the variant with the reference side by side at full size, then on a phone, then on a second screen. If the colour differs on any screen, discard the variant.
- If a stray mark survives, open Erase and paint over that spot only, never over the product. Erase costs 1 image credit only on success.
- Download at your marketplace size and publish only variants that match the reference. Backgrounds, sizes and downloads cost no extra credits.
5 prompts you can paste into the app
Prompts stay in English: models follow English prompts most reliably. Put the product and its exact colour first, then the scene, then the colour lock.
Product photo of a terracotta ceramic vase, warm earthy orange-brown, on a plain white background, soft daylight, no text, keep the exact terracotta colour, glaze and shape unchanged.Product photo of a sage green ceramic mug on a light wooden table, soft morning light, no text, keep the exact sage green colour, glaze and handle shape unchanged, do not make it mint or olive.Product photo of a navy knitted sweater folded neatly on a pale grey surface, even light, no text, keep the exact navy colour, knit texture and shape unchanged.Product photo of a beige linen cushion on a white sofa, soft daylight, no text, keep the exact beige colour, linen texture and piping unchanged, do not warm or cool the colour.Product photo of a black leather wallet on a light stone surface, soft diffused light, no text, keep the exact black colour, leather grain and stitching unchanged.

Tips
- Name the colour in the listing text, not just in the photo: a name is a second check when screens disagree.
- Keep one reference file untouched: every variant compares against it, and it never gets edited itself.
- Check matte products in daylight and glossy products in diffused light: each material lies under the wrong light.
- Export at marketplace size before the colour check: compression at export size is part of what buyers see.
Common mistakes
- Checking colour on one screen only: the screen that flatters your product is rarely the screen your buyer uses.
- Publishing an AI-invented colour as a purchasable variant: the order is for a colour you do not stock.
- Judging colour by the whole frame: a new background changes the average tone even when the product is perfect.
- Building variants on a doubtful reference: if the original already drifts, every variant inherits the drift.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my product look right on my computer but wrong on a phone?
Screens differ in brightness, warmth and saturation, and phones are where most buyers shop. A colour checked on one screen only is unchecked. Always check the export on a phone and on a second screen before publishing.
Can AI create a new colour variant I have not photographed?
Not as a purchasable variant. An AI-invented colour is a guess about a product you do not sell, and buyers will order the guess. Photograph every real variant, and use AI only to change the background around it.
What is the fastest colour check before publishing?
Put the reference photo and the export side by side at full size, look at the product only, and ignore the background. If you must ask whether the colour matches, it does not.
What does one colour-checked image cost in Movapix?
Erase costs 1 image credit only on success, and an AI scene costs 1 image credit after you confirm. Backgrounds, sizes and downloads in Product Studio cost no extra credits.
