AI product photo shadows, reflections, and relighting: make the scene believable
Buyers may not know the word for it, but they feel it instantly: a floating product, a shadow pointing the wrong way, a reflection from nowhere. Light is what makes a scene true.
Contact shadow vs cast shadow: how to spot a photo 'pasted' onto a background
The contact shadow is the dark, tight line where a product touches a surface: short, soft at the edges, darkest right under the product. It tells the eye the product has weight and sits on something. Remove it, and even a perfect cut-out floats like a sticker.
The cast shadow is the longer shadow thrown away from the light: to the right when light comes from the left, long and soft when the light is low, short and hard when it is high. Its direction is a fact about the scene: every object in one scene must cast its shadow the same way, or the scene has two suns.
To spot a pasted product, check three things in order. First, is there a contact shadow at all? Second, does the cast shadow point away from the scene light? Third, does the shadow softness match the light: hard light gives hard edges, soft window light soft edges. One failure is enough to reject the image, because buyers notice floating products even when they cannot explain why.
In Product Studio, keep the soft shadow under the cut-out on for studio shots. A shadow too dark looks like a stain, and one too long looks like evening light in a morning scene, so judge the shadow at phone thumbnail size, not full-size preview.
Reflections on glossy surfaces: when to keep them and when to drop them
Keep a reflection when the surface would really make one. A perfume bottle on marble, a watch on polished wood, sunglasses on glass: these surfaces reflect, so a soft, slightly dimmer copy of the product below it belongs there. The reflection must match the product in shape and colour, sit directly below it, and look softer than the product, because a reflection is always weaker than its source.
Drop a reflection when the surface would not make one. Matte paper, fabric, rough stone, and dull wood do not mirror products, so a crisp reflection on them reads as invented. Dropping it costs nothing: a product without a reflection on a matte surface looks honest, while one with one looks rendered.
Watch two reflection traps. First, a reflection sharper than the product: real reflections blur with distance, so a razor-sharp mirror copy betrays the edit. Second, a reflection showing something the product does not show: a label, colour, or detail missing from the product means the reflection came from a different product.
Water and glass follow their own rule: the reflection flips vertically and fades with depth. If a scene invents a sideways reflection, or one brighter than the product, discard it. A believable reflection is quiet; a loud one is what a buyer distrusts first.
Relighting to match the scene: one main light source, check shadow direction
Relighting means making the product light agree with the scene light, not making the product brighter. Name the scene light before you generate: window light from the left, warm and soft, or midday light from above, cool and hard. Then lock it in the prompt and forbid a second light source: two hard lights give two shadows, and two shadows end the argument.
Check direction with a simple line test: draw an imaginary line from the scene light, through the product, to where the shadow should fall. If the product shadow falls anywhere else, the lights disagree. Check warmth too: a warm-lit product in a cool-lit scene looks pasted even with the shadow direction right.
Match intensity as well as direction. A product lit brightly in a dim scene glows like a sticker, and a dim product in a bright scene looks dirty. Product highlights and shadows should sit in the same range as the scene highlights and shadows. When in doubt, choose the plainer scene: a simple bright room forgives small light errors that a dramatic sunset exposes.
Steps
- Photograph the real product in soft, single-direction light, and note where the light comes from: left, right, or above. That direction is the rule every later scene must obey.
- Open Product Studio and upload the photo. Place the untouched cut-out on a plain background with a soft shadow under it, so the product touches the surface instead of floating.
- For a scene variant, generate one AI scene and lock the light: name the light direction and warmth, forbid a second light source, forbid shadows pointing another way, and forbid adding text.
- Check the contact shadow where the product meets the surface, then the cast shadow direction, then any reflection. If any of the three disagrees with the scene light, discard it.
- If a stray shadow or mark survives, open Erase and paint over that spot only, never over the product. Erase costs 1 image credit only on success.
- Download at your marketplace size and publish only scenes whose light, shadow and reflection agree. Backgrounds, sizes and downloads cost no extra credits.
5 prompts you can paste into the app
Prompts stay in English: models follow English prompts most reliably. Put the product first, then light and surface, then the shadow and reflection lock.
Product photo of a glass perfume bottle on white marble, soft window light from the left, gentle contact shadow, soft reflection below the bottle, keep the bottle, label and shape exactly unchanged.Product photo of a ceramic mug on a light wooden table, warm morning light from the right, one soft cast shadow to the left, no reflection, keep the mug, colour and handle exactly unchanged.Product photo of a silver watch on dark polished wood, soft diffused light from above, gentle contact shadow, soft reflection below the watch, keep the watch, dial and strap exactly unchanged.Product photo of sunglasses on a plain light grey surface, even daylight, one soft shadow under the glasses, no reflection, keep the glasses, frame colour and lenses exactly unchanged.Product photo of a scented candle in a glass jar on a beige stone surface, soft evening light from the left, one cast shadow to the right, keep the candle, jar and label exactly unchanged.

Tips
- Judge shadows at phone thumbnail size: a shadow fine large can look like a stain small.
- Keep the soft shadow on in Product Studio for studio shots: no shadow reads as floating.
- Check the reflection after the shadow: a right shadow with a wrong reflection still fails the scene.
- When a scene light is hard to name, do not use that scene.
Common mistakes
- Publishing a floating product: no contact shadow is the fastest trust failure in a listing.
- Allowing two shadow directions: scene and product were lit in different rooms, and buyers feel it.
- Adding a crisp reflection on a matte surface: the reflection invents a material the surface does not have.
- Relighting only for brightness: a brighter product in a dim scene glows like a sticker, however sharp it is.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to spot a pasted product?
Look where the product meets the surface. No contact shadow means the product floats, and a shadow pointing the wrong way means scene light and product light disagree. Either one is enough to reject the image.
Should a glossy product always have a reflection?
Only on a surface that would really reflect it, like marble, glass or polished wood. On matte paper, fabric or stone, a reflection looks invented. Match the reflection to the surface, not to the product alone.
How many light sources should a scene have?
One main light. Soft fill light is fine when it casts no second shadow, but two hard lights give two shadows, the clearest sign of a rebuilt scene.
What does one relit scene cost in Movapix?
Erase costs 1 image credit only on success, and an AI scene costs 1 image credit after you confirm. Backgrounds, sizes and downloads in Product Studio cost no extra credits.
Try it now
Photograph one product in window light today, note the light direction, and finish it in Product Studio with its shadow intact. Agreeing light is the difference between a photo and a scene.
